Welcome to Mrs. Hegwood’s Humanities Class!
Parents, in order for your child to have a successful year they should;
- always be prepared for class. Make sure you have the necessary supplies, notes, folders, and books.
- come to class with a spirit of learning. Be prepared to think for themselves and ask questions only after they have thoroughly thought about the task at hand.
- respect their classmates’ right to learn and their teacher’s duty to teach. Behave in ways that support and encourage their classmates to participate in class activities.
- do their very best at all times and never be afraid to ask questions!
To support academic success, students are required to:
- monitor their grades on a daily basis
- submit classwork and homework daily
- take notes daily
- write each assignment in their notes and homework journal
- return signed classroom progress reports which will be given on a on a weekly basis and have parent to check parent portal weekly.
8th Grade
During your child’s 8th grade year, he/she will attend many 8th grade activities. Eighth grade is an expensive year. Parents spend about $500.00 for graduation fees, the 8th grade luncheon, class trip, celebrations, and various trips throughout the year. This amount does not include the spending money parents usually give to students for trips. Students who work hard and behave well will be rewarded for their achievements. Rewards vary from homework passes to field trips and pizza parties. Students who earn grade point averages of less than a “C” will not be allowed to participate in non-academic activities.
Grading
Daily classwork and homework assignments will be reviewed with students to ensure they understand the concepts that were taught:
- Humanities – All Social Science work will involve Project-Based Activities that will require a great deal of Research.
- Reading – The 8th grade class will read novels, short stories, and non-fiction. They will be graded on vocabulary and reading concepts (summarizing, cause/effect, fact/opinion, inference, plot structure, characterization, etc.) Reading and vocabulary quizzes will be given after each chapter or short story. Student will complete reading projects as well.
- Late Assignments – All work is due on a timely basis or more specifically on it’s due date. Late work is unacceptable.
- Students will not be penalized for late work if they are absent and bring a note when they return to school.
- Grading Scale – Students’ grades will be distributed as follows:
Classwork = 20%
Quizzes/Tests = 40%
Projects = 30%
Homework = 10% |
|
A = 90% -100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 70%
D = 60% - 69%
F = 0% - 59% |
